Hand Rankings

The Hand Rankings remains the same no matter which type of poker game you play.

A poker hand consists of five cards. Poker hands fall into one of several categories, such as flush, straight, or two pair. The player with the highest ranking hand is the winner.

The hands are shown here from the strongest to the weakest.

1. Royal Flush

A royal flush is an ace high straight flush.

2. Straight Flush

A straight flush is a five-card straight, all in the same suit.

3. Four of a kind – Quads

Four of a kind also known as quads, are four cards of equal rank.

4. Full

Also known as a full house, this combines a set of three cards of one rank and a pair of another rank.

5. Flush

A flush is any five cards, all of the same suit.

6. Straight

A straight is five cards of sequential rank. Every possible straight will contain either a 5 or a 10.

7. Three of a kind

Three of a kind means three cards of the same rank.

8. Two Pair

A two pair is two cards of one rank and another two cards of another rank.

9. Pair

One pair is two cards of the same rank.

10. Carta más alta

Si ningún jugador consigue formar alguna de las figuras anteriores, gana la mano donde esté la carta más alta. En caso de empate, se tomará en cuenta la siguiente carta más alta, y así sucesivamente.

There are some games referred to as Hi/Lo (meaning high and low.) In order to win the pot in these types of games, not only must you consider the Hand Rankings as explained above but also the lowest hand. The pot is then split between two winning hands: the high one and the low one.

Hi/Lo games are played with an “eight qualifier” for the low hand. This is where a player must have five unpaired cards lower than eight in order to win the low part of the pot. A low hand is a hand that contains five different cards less than or equal to 8. An example of this would be: A- 2- 4- 7- 8.

Straights and flushes do not count toward a low hand, and aces are treated as the lowest card. Hands with five cards of equal rank share the low pot equally, regardless of suit.

In this kind of games, the best possible low hand to have is a 5-high straight, also known as a wheel or a bicycle. Should two or more players have a wheel/bicycle, the low portion of the pot is split between them. All wheels and bicycles are equal, regardless of suit.

If no player gets five different cards that are lower than or equal to eight, then there is no low hand and only the highest hand is taken into consideration to derive the winner. In this case, there will only be one winner and the pot will not be split.
